The Beauty Academy of Kabul < PREVIOUS MOVIE | NEXT MOVIE >
Directed by Liz Mermin
Documentary • 74 minutes • USA

For many decades, the women of Afghanistan lived beneath the veil, forced into literal invisibility in a culture where their presence alone was considered an affront to Muslim doctrine. The thought of getting a fashionable haircut or painting your nails is one of the highest forms of expression in a society no longer built on masculine oppression. In July 2003, a group of hairdressers from the Western world descended upon Kabul to open Afghanistan’s first post-Taliban beauty school and to prepare Afghan women for a taste of financial independence as well as freedom of expression. Liz Mermin’s account of their journey shows the profound change in personalities that can come with such endeavors. It also shows an awakening among the American and British women who set out on a mission hoping to do a little bit of good in a place they don’t fully understand. This powerful film confirms that while beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, empowering people to behold for themselves is just as beautiful.
