Born Into Brothels < PREVIOUS MOVIE | NEXT MOVIE >
Directed by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski
Documentary • 85 minutes • USA

Born Into Brothels directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman chronicle the amazing transformation of the children living in Calcutta’s red light district. Briski, a professional photographer and co-director, and Ross Kauffman provide the impoverished children with cameras and follow them through the streets as they document their world. In the process of learning photography, the children are exposed to a world outside of their own and a narrative unfurls during their journey of learning and self-discovery that may just provide them with the opportunity they desperately need to escape their unfortunate situations. By framing the children in extreme close-ups and juxtaposing their own images with those taken by the children, Briski and Kauffman establish the distinct personality and voice of their subjects while creating a style that is remarkably fresh and beautiful. Born Into Brothels won the Academy Award this year for best documentary film.
