West Side Story < PREVIOUS MOVIE | NEXT MOVIE >
Directed by Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise
Feature Film • 151 minutes • USA

West Side Story is an energetic, widely-acclaimed, melodramatic musical. The modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet tragedy of feuding families, is set in the Upper West Side of New York City in the late 1950s. West Side Story is still one of the best film adaptations of a musical ever created, and the finest musical film of the 60s.
West Side Story was named the best picture of 1961 and won 10 Academy Awards. This was the first American musical where the late great Leonard Bernstein wrote the music, Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics and famed choreographer Jerome Robbins designed the dance routines. The music, dance and intensity makes West Side Story one of the greatest American musicals ever made.
