Canada / India 2005 • Directed by Deepa Mehta • Feature Film • 117 minutes
Set in the 1930s during the rise of the independence struggles against British colonial rule, the film examines the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. It focuses on a relationship between one woman, who wants to escape the social restrictions imposed on widows, and a man who is from a lower caste and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. “Water” catapults the audience into an alien culture, and particularly displays love, loss and prejudice.
